Now there’s a sight for sore eyes. While the world’s most famous athlete never truly left the city’s restaurant scene—he’s a partner in acclaimed contemporary American spot one sixtyblue on West Randolph—things just hadn’t been the same downtown since 1999, when Michael Jordan’s Restaurant closed. As anyone who travels abroad knows, when you say “I’m from Chicago,” people without fail bring up two names: Michael Jordan and Al Capone. While there is, perhaps rightfully, no real monument to the infamous gangster, it just didn’t seem right that visitors from around the world had nowhere to go to pay homage to—and, if they’re very lucky, perhaps on the right night even run into—the man who many consider to be the greatest athlete in history.
As of this fall, though, all that has changed. Enter the new Michael Jordan’s Steak House at the InterContinental Chicago, smack dab on Michigan Avenue. Tourists looking to pay tribute to the Jordan legend can now reminisce on his magic moments in a gorgeous contemporary space of moody lighting, slick glass and red booths. The best part? Executive Chef James O’Donnell’s cuisine, from the super-decadent blue-cheese garlic bread to the aged bone-in rib-eye, has been reviewed well almost universally.
“It’s a lot of fun seeing something go from being an idea on paper to a finished product, whether it’s a steak house or a shoe line,” says Jordan via e-mail. “I felt the timing was right for a new restaurant. I’d been looking for the opportunity to open a steak house and the InterContinental Chicago is the perfect location. It just made sense. It’s not every day you get to dine in a historic landmark building overlooking the Mag Mile.”
Wondering what Jordan eats when he checks in? That would be “MJ’s Prime Delmonico,” a 16-ounce cut of deliciousness served in a ginger-balsamic vinegar jus. It’s so good it almost lives up to its super-powered name.
