With each entry in Jason Statham’s increasingly prolific film catalogue, the mayhem seems to mount. He doesn’t just kickbox a couple of foes anymore; he disposes of dozens at once, with the occasional severed limb thrown in. He doesn’t just steer a muscle car up a mall escalator; at one point in his latest offering, The Expendables, in which a team of misfit mercenaries destroys an evil dictator, Statham leans out of the nose of a seaplane diving at 200 miles per hour to set a forest of baddies on fire.

It’s after 9pm on a Friday. Michelle Williams has just finished work and is pottering about the house, cracking open a bottle of wine and putting out a cheese plate. Dressed in ballet pumps, jeans and a soft, stripy sweater, she looks beautiful in an effortless way. She slips away to check on sleeping five-year-old daughter Matilda (whose dad is the late actor Heath Ledger). Mom, daughter and an au pair recently decamped from New York to this rented home in London while Williams shoots the title role in My Week with Marilyn, co-starring Kenneth Branagh.

Mila Kunis sits down in the back booth of an L.A. diner and starts talking. “I have to buy an iPad for my friend’s birthday,” she says. “But I hate the mall. The mall frightens me.” It’s a slow, soggy day in the San Fernando Valley, but listening to Kunis, 27, you’d think you were in Times Square. Like a professional New Yorker—which she is not—Kunis talks fast, orders quickly and switches from subject to subject without changing gears.

“Let’s start with jewelry!” exclaims Molly Sims when she calls from her West Hollywood home. Sims sounds like a teenager: bubbly, giggly and animated. In the past year or so, she’s been busy turning herself into a one-woman cottage industry, equal parts actress and businesswoman—talking rings and bracelets on the Home Shopping Network, launching her e-commerce site and retail presence and shooting a new comedy pilot for the Adult Swim network.

On Your Mark!

“Mark’s usually right on time, so he should be here any minute,” the server at the Polo Lounge says with a song in her voice. She’s grinning as she clears the extra place settings from the back corner table that is, or so it seems, Mark Wahlberg’s favored lunch spot on the patio at The Beverly Hills Hotel. Another server arrives to pour ice water. “Mark’s back,” the first waiter coos to her. “Oh, Mark,” the second waiter sighs back. “He’s such a great guy. We love, love Mark.”
