Part of a major reboot for the California Hotel affordable housing complex, this will be the first permanent brick-and-mortar location for chef Rashad Armstead, who started Crave BBQ last year as a West Oakland pop-up. Specialties include pulled pork, slow-smoked ribs, and brisket. 3501 San Pablo Ave. (at 35th St.)

With three restaurants in San Francisco under her belt, chef Brenda Buenviaje will bring her New Orleans–inspired cooking across the bay to Oakland’s Lower Temescal neighborhood. The new fast-casual spot will serve some of the dishes Buenviaje is best known for, including her po’ boys (pictured above), fried chicken, and beignets. 4045 Broadway (at 41st St.)

Two year ago, Bon Appétit named Arsicault’s original Richmond district location the best new bakery in the whole country. Now owner Armando Lacayo brings his croissants and kouign amanns—plus an expanded menu that includes sandwiches and espresso drinks—to Mid-Market. 83 McAllister St. (at Leavenworth St.)
